Wishlist Wednesday - It's Witchcraft!

I am absolutely obsessed with this season of American Horror Story: Coven. I loved season one (Murder House) and not so much season two (Asylum), but season three has proven to me thus far to be the best yet.

Not withstanding the shock and awe and controversy, the standout for me is definitely the style. It's called gravitas. The whole cast of women is full of it. They are bigger than life. They are extremely talented. And finely dressed, even if only so simply.

I have seen their influence on many even though it has only been on air for a few weeks. It's simple, elegant, and best of all, dark ;) It's perfect for this time of year!

I tend to wear tons of black anyway because it is easiest. Also because I am kind of lazy ;) But lots of layered black with a good boot (or bootie, heel, flat, oxford) can look really polished and chic.  I meant for this to post before Halloween but I suppose I got a little sidetracked by school. I am trying to do so many things at once!

cutout maxi dress; floral longline cardigan;
bleached dress; cutout booties; buckle booties
I love this "trend" (if you want to call it that)...dresses are the best and easiest and most comfortable next to leggings as pants ;)

Wishlist Wednesday - Design Edition

Since I was recently gifted this wonderful painting by the very talented Gino Perez, I've got a little rearranging to do in my apartment. (edit: he just added a ton of his artwork on his Instagram..check it out!)

"history of women in art" by gino perez
It got me thinking about inspiration for apartment decor in a perfect world and with an endless amount of funds.

a bar cart is necessary for sure (source)

I love the starkness of this white bedroom --

The playfulness of this shabby chic bathroom is uplifting. I wouldn't mind soaking in this clawfoot tub any day of the week --

And see, I'm not the only one obsessed with overstuffed gallery walls! This is divine --

So while I'm busy shifting furniture, possibly getting rid of some things, I'll be dreaming of these lovely spaces.

New Beauty Splurges (With Reviews)

I've been slowly building up my confidence with playing with makeup. I used to keep it really simple. I've progressed from just pressed powder, to a little primer or BB cream with some tinted moisturizer, to actually learning how to contour and highlight with various powders.

I don't have time, obviously, to do a full on beauty queen face every day. Nor would I want to. It's so much work! But I have so many tutorials and inspiration pinned to my beauty board on Pinterest ;)

benefit brow-zings! ($30); stila stay all day waterproof liquid eyeliner ($20)
too faced chocolate soleil matte bronzer ($30); benefit hervana luminzer ($28)
I love the Benefit Brow Zings for perfect brows every time. I used to use the Lancome Poudre Pencil but never really got the exact definition I needed, though it worked fine just to fill in the gaps. However, this brow "wax" and powder with the little brushes help me achieve the full brows I love. Also you use so little of the product that it will last me for-ev-errr.

For the longest time I'd also given up on eyeliner. I mean, I liked the Lancome Art Liner fine enough, too. It was very precise, but there wasn't very much product in the tube for the price. This one by Stila is twenty bucks, waterproof, and a little easier to maneuver than the Art Liner wand. The liner "pen" has a very flexible, fluid tip almost like a paint brush. It's easy to control and makes a cat eye also very easy to accomplish.

Contouring used to be such a hard thing for me to get a handle on, but the Chocolate Soleil matte bronzer works wonders. It was recommended to me by my sister in law and I haven't looked back. I have tried other bronzers, but they all have shimmer in them. This one is great because you can achieve that look without a shiny glittery face. Just "hollow out" your cheekbones and create the shadows (with a contouring brush or small powder brush) -- and mmmm it smells like chocolate and even tastes like it!

Lastly, my new obsession is the Hervana blush "luminizer" by Benefit. It smells heavenly and gives a soft, natural, peachy/coral glow on a nicely polished face. There's a cute little brush included but I do prefer to use my own blush brush. Just swirl in the palette and swoop across the cheeks.

I'm no expert, and the reviews were not solicited. Product paid out of my own pocket and it's all just trial and error! I'm interested in any product that would give the same amount of bang for a fraction of the buck, but so far I've just wasted money on cheaper product that just doesn't perform. What says you??

Tis the Season to Be Creepy

Sometimes I plan for Halloween starting the whole year before. Sometimes the plans pan out, sometimes they don't. But it's still so fun to brainstorm. I can't seem to find my skull string lights I bought at Home Depot last year!!

painted pink pumpkins + googly eyes = fun, festive, and pretty
But I do still have my hangman, which needs a noose!

Looking for something more kid-friendly for Halloween? How about these amazing Tim Burton costumes -

Or better yet, this Cheshire Cat makeup? (That's still missing an original source...? Anyone know?)

But my favorite is this tablescape from Style Me Pretty

cool for fall, especially halloween

More like ROCKtober

I don't know how I am going to survive this month with school alone but I decided that it was a good time also to see all of my favorite bands this month. I mean, October will really be like my dream fest fulfilled, but I also have so much work to do!

I'm so inspired though. Music brings out my inner bad ass ;) So I know it will be a ton of fun. On the calendar - DEPECHE MODE! Modest Mouse, Tim Kasher, and Jenny Lewis. I am still trying to somehow manage tickets for Kanye West which would make this October the most epic of my concert history.

I also have a ton of papers to write so i'm just trying to manage my time and planning my outlines now so that I can get them done by the deadlines!

Keep in touch on Instagram and maybe I'll see you there!

Wishlist Wednesday ;)

It's not an official theme or anything but I'm just itching for a new pair of flats. I am in love with these loafers. Forever 21 is also having free shipping on orders of $21 or more through September 25th. No promo code needed!

I know, I know...two posts in a row for F21 but when I'm at school in gym clothes because it's still too hot to dress nicely for class, it's all I can think about (besides the course materials, obviously!)

I can't decide between the cat flats, the D'orsay, or the black total stud loafer. They are all just too cute. Maybe I can stop by the store to see how they fit on my feet!  Wish me luck ;)

Curly Girl Problems

Okay, okay. So I don't know my curl pattern. I don't know all the terms...but am becoming more familiar with cowashing, twist-outs, and the like. Remember, I'm still in "Hair Restoration" mode.

But I am still in a little bit of distress as to what to actually put in my hair after, and what works best for me and my life. I am willing and open to learn, though. Guides like this really do help!

this car selfie says it all - "bleeehhhhh"
I would prefer more of a "wash and go" style. I don't want to have to take an hour to individually twist or curl each strand or lock of curls/waves. My hair is more curly at the root and more wavy towards the ends.

sleeping on day old hair...yikes

I have also experimented with various shampoos and conditioners, as well as going to "no poo" route and using baking soda & vinegar with periodic coconut oil/olive oil treatments. While I did love the price (read: baking soda and apple cider vinegar are cheap as dirt), I don't like the time it takes to fully transition and even then it was hit or miss for a good hair day. It looked almost dredlocked. Not what I was going for.

Right now I'm alternating between the Proclaim brand Strengthening shampoo & conditioner from Sally's with Organix brand Ginger & Awapuhi repairing shampoo & conditioner from Ulta. The Proclaim has lessened the breakage, and the Organix smells really good and does make my hair feel softer. I just havent figured out what to do for after I wash/condition my hair. What do I put in?

All of this leaves me ending up with just putting my hair into a braid and saying "Forget about it!" But I don't want to go back to the flat iron. Though I miss the ease with which I could just put it up in a slick ponytail (set it and forget it?) I knew that I was doing more harm than good.

I used to use Infusium 23 religiously as a kid to teen, and recently began using it again but it makes my hair feel a little filmy. The Proclaim leave-in conditioner is no better. For styling I've tried Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls, and while it worked at first, it left my hair so dry I ended up returning it to Target. I also tried the Curly Meringue sample and liked that even less. It's just not something that worked for me.

So now I'm set on trying Eden Body Works Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme, but now after reading the reviews it may turn out to be a bust, too.

will you be my hair savior?

From what I gather it works better on tighter curls than looser ones like mine. But we shall see! I settled on this after scouring the labels on each product. Some of them are just packed with the weirdest things and I think the only appealing part about them is the price. This was not so unreasonable - $8.

What lengths do you go to for your hair?
